Of Note….in Music Class Quarter 1!
Kindergarten
We are learning traditional songs and songs to help with our routine: “Hello,” “Let’s Make a Circle,” “This is My Space,” and “Goodbye Song.” We are exploring percussion instruments such as the glockenspiel, hand drum, rhythm sticks, triangle, sand scrappers, woodblock etc. At the end of our percussion unit, we will create kazoos and maracas. We will bring these home to show you!
First Grade
First graders are learning about the music staff. So far, we know the numbers of the lines and spaces on the treble clef as well as their letter names. We are singing too. Our voices sound great! We learned a dance “Clap, Clap Bow” and discovered it followed ABA form. Next, we will begin learning Flag songs. We will be adding movement, instruments and hand signing, (something special for each song we learn). Be sure ask your child about “Froggie Goes to School” in the upcoming weeks. We will act out the story, sing songs related to the story and play instruments.
Second Grade
Second grade super singers already know a series of school rule songs: “Follow the Instructions,” “Go Back,” “Keep Your Hands To Yourself,” and “Life Is Better With a Friend.” They are working on the floor staff naming the all the notes on the treble clef. Shortly, students will begin preparing for their mini-musical, Tikki Tikki Tembo. This musical is based on an ancient oriental folktale. Our performance is scheduled for November 15th. We can’t wait to perform for family and friends.
Third Grade
Third grade is an exciting year as we begin our recorder program. In the first few lessons we will learn how to take care of our recorder, its parts, holding the recorder, proper posture, breathing and tonguing. Next, we will learn to finger the notes B, A, and G. Using those three notes we will know how to play our first song “Hot Cross Buns.” Students will be able to take their recorders home once we can all play our first song. There is a special cabinet in the Music Room where we keep our recorders so that we are always prepared for class.
Fourth Grade
Fourth graders are doing a terrific job playing on Orff instruments. They are layering accompaniment parts to an Irish-American folk song: “Paddy Worked on the Railroad.” Students know all four verses of the melody and can perform all instrumental parts such as the Bass, xylophone and percussion accompaniment. Next, we are moving on to an all percussion piece “Peter Peter Pumpkin Eater.” Some cool percussion instruments we will be using are the hand drum, temple blocks, tambourine, triangle, They have also focused on reviewing note names using our floor staff and eventually names notes on leger lines above and below the treble clef.
Fifth Grade
Fifth grade is into the science of note values. We used manipulatives to study the relationship between various notes. We have learned part one of a two-part song called “Best Friends.” Once we master part two, we will be able to sing in harmony.
Sixth Grade
Our school is cool! We are cool! We learn to play guitar beginning in sixth grade. We are creating videos of exercises we learn to play on all six strings. Soon, we will play melodies. Ask us to see these. They are in our Music Folder. Our vocal unit is starting. Mid-quarter, we will begin creating compositions using the Garageband app.
